How to improve writing – Ways to improve your English

  1. Brainstorm something you can write about. Start without using grammar, then later go back and add grammar and structure to your text. This is great writing practice.
  2. Get a notebook. Write down any words and phrases you want to learn. Then try to use these words and phrases in conversation.
  3. Join an English speaking forum and engage with the members. You like sport? Join a football forum. You like video games? Join the forum for that game. Have fun typing about topics you are passionate about whilst also practicing your English.
  4. Use post-it notes around your house. Use them to label things around your home, to help you learn.
  5. Buy a diary and document your day in English rather than your native tongue. If you do this over a long period of time you will also be able to look back and see how far you have progressed.
  6. Request to record your lessons. This will help make sure you take in all the information you require and put less pressure on you to write down every single thing your teacher says all at once. Meaning you will have more time to listen and absorb the information he/she is giving you.
  7. When learning words think of all possible forms, interesting (adjective), interestingly (adverb), interest (noun).
  8. Punctuation can completely change the meaning of a sentence, and make it easier to read.
  9. Using the correct article (a, a, the) in English, can make you sound like a natural English speaker. So here is the general rule “a/an’” when talking about something ‘non specific’, and ‘the’ for something ‘specific’.
